Part-Time Handyman

Part-timeCentral Iowa

Take on a wide variety of home repairs, maintenance, and small improvement projects while working independently in customers’ homes. We’re looking for a versatile problem-solver with a solid foundation in the trades who wants the flexibility of part-time work without giving up the opportunity to take ownership of their own projects. Competitive hourly pay based on experience and skill level.

We’re looking for someone with a solid foundation in residential repair who can grow into running their own handyman appointments. You do not need to be highly proficient in every service we offer on day one.

Our Handyman division handles shorter repairs, installations, maintenance items, and homeowner project lists. The work changes from day to day, so this role calls for practical troubleshooting, good judgment, resourcefulness, and clear communication in customers’ homes.

What you’ll do

  • Complete a variety of home repairs and improvements, such as drywall and paint touch-ups, trim, door installation, hardware, mounting, minor flooring repairs, caulking, and deck or railing repairs.
  • Review appointment notes, photos, and priorities before arriving.
  • Run assigned handyman appointments independently once trained and approved to do so.
  • Help homeowners prioritize what can reasonably be completed during a half-day, full-day, or individually scoped appointment.
  • Troubleshoot unexpected conditions and determine the best path forward rather than simply stopping when something does not go according to plan.
  • Keep the customer informed when conditions, materials, or priorities change.
  • Protect the home, document your work, clean up, and complete a final walkthrough.
  • Communicate proactively with the Handyman Manager and Handyman Coordinator when additional materials, support, or changes to the scope are needed.

What you need coming in

  • A demonstrated foundation in several common residential repairs. You do not need to know every service we offer.
  • The ability to troubleshoot and think independently in the field.
  • The judgment to recognize the limits of your current skill and ask for support before proceeding with unfamiliar work.
  • A willingness to learn new repair methods and accept feedback.
  • Strong attention to detail and pride in the quality of your work.
  • Professional communication and comfort working directly with homeowners.
  • Dependability and the ability to follow through on commitments.
  • A valid driver’s license.

Your initial training will include working alongside our Handyman Manager, our most tenured field employee. You’ll learn our service mix, systems, appointment pacing, quality standards, and approach to customer care. You will also receive direct support and guidance from the Handyman Coordinator. Our goal is to get you comfortable running suitable appointments independently as quickly as your demonstrated skill and judgment allow. We’ll continue supporting you as you expand the types of jobs you can take on.

This is a part-time, hourly position. Hours will vary based on availability, company workload, and scheduling needs. We’re looking for someone who can provide dependable availability during our normal Monday–Friday operating schedule. This could be a strong fit for an experienced tradesperson looking for additional hours, someone who prefers a part-time schedule, or someone interested in joining Iowa Home Consulting without committing to a full-time position.

Specific weekly availability and scheduling expectations will be discussed during the hiring process.

This is an hourly position, with the starting rate based on experience, demonstrated skill, and the range of handyman work you can perform independently. We’ll discuss the specific hourly rate, expected weekly hours, scheduling availability, and applicable benefits or incentives during the hiring process.
