Why book by the day
Transparent pricing and fast service, without an estimate in between.
Most homeowners don't have one project. They have a list. A day block is built for that list: you get a professional for a set number of hours at a price you can see before you commit, and we work top-down through your priorities.
We're not the cheapest handyman in Central Iowa. We're licensed and insured, our techs are experienced, we've invested in real tools and real training, and we stand behind the work with a Limited Lifetime Workmanship Guarantee. What you're buying is speed and a job done right the first time.
Published price, zero haggling
You know the number before anyone knocks. No sales visit, no scope games, no surprise line items.
Speed is the product
The dates you see are real open crew windows. Choose one and you're on the schedule, not in a callback queue.
Insured, registered, guaranteed
Iowa registration #C106200, $1M/$2M liability, full workers' comp, and a written lifetime workmanship guarantee.
Your list, your order
Tell us what matters most. The tech works the list in priority order so the important items are finished first.

Belongs with our remodeling division instead
These aren't day-rate work, and we don't try to force them onto the handyman calendar. They go to our design-build remodeling team, which is scoped, quoted, and scheduled its own way.
- · Full kitchen, bath, or basement remodels
- · Anything requiring a permit or inspection
- · Work needing a licensed electrician or plumber
- · Special-order parts, cabinets, or countertops
- · Whole-house interior or exterior painting
- · Water damage restoration and structural repairs
Two divisions, one company
Handyman and remodeling are run as separate operations.
Same company, same values, same guarantee - but deliberately different businesses. Day-rate booking, this page, and this calendar apply to the handyman division only.

Payment, materials & policies
Everything you'd otherwise have to call and ask.
- No deposit to book
- Nothing is charged when you reserve a block online. You pay after the work is done.
- Invoiced after the visit
- We send an invoice once the service is complete, and payment is due upon receipt.
- All common payment methods
- Credit card, debit card, other electronic payments, or check. Most customers just pay the invoice electronically.
- Materials are extra
- The day rate is skilled labor only. If we purchase materials, parts, or fixtures for your job, they're billed in addition to the half-day or full-day charge.
- You can supply your own materials
- If you've already bought what's needed, we won't charge you for materials - we're just happy to install them. If you'd rather we handle sourcing, we will.
- Store runs count as working time
- If we need to make a supply run during your visit, that trip is inside the purchased hours. Having materials on site is the easiest way to get more done in a block.
- Cancellations inside 24 hours
- Cancellations inside 24 hours of the visit may be charged a trip fee. Outside that window, we'll happily move your block to another open date.
- Same flat rate across our service area
- No trip fee, mileage charge, or zone surcharge anywhere in our normal Central Iowa footprint. Outside of it, call first and we'll be straight with you.
- One handyman per block
- A half day or full day is one experienced tech. If your list really needs two people, call and we'll price a two-tech block instead.
- Some work isn't a day-rate fit
- Anything needing a permit or inspection, a licensed electrician or plumber, special-order parts, roof work, or suspected mold, asbestos, or structural damage gets quoted as a project instead.
Iowa sales tax applies to the day rate and to materials. Iowa contractor registration #C106200 · $1M/$2M general liability · full workers' compensation · Limited Lifetime Workmanship Guarantee.
The fine print
Said plainly, up front.
We'd rather over-explain now than surprise you later. This is the same language you'll confirm at booking.
- The rate covers labor only. Materials are billed separately.
- A half day is 4 working hours on site and a full day is 8 working hours on site, including setup and cleanup.
- Any supply or parts runs needed during the visit count inside those working hours. The clock does not stop for a store trip.
- Arrival is a window, not an exact time. The tech will reach out the morning of the visit.
- If the work is not finished inside the purchased block, we schedule another visit rather than billing extra time that day.
- Some tasks cannot be completed in the block if permits, special order parts, or a second trade are required.
- Cancellations inside 24 hours of the visit may be charged a trip fee.
FAQ
Handyman day rate, answered.
How much does a handyman cost per day in Central Iowa?
Our published flat rates are $450 for a half day of 4 working hours and $850 for a full day of 8 working hours, plus Iowa sales tax and the cost of any materials. That price is the same whether you're in Ames, Des Moines, Ankeny, Urbandale, Johnston, or anywhere else in our normal service area.
What counts as working hours?
A half day is 4 hours on site and a full day is 8 hours on site, including setup and cleanup. If we need to run for parts or supplies during your visit, that trip counts inside the purchased hours. The clock does not stop for a store run, which is why it helps to have materials on hand if you already know what you want.
Are materials included in the price?
No. The day rate covers skilled labor only. Materials, parts, and fixtures are billed separately at cost. You're welcome to buy your own materials ahead of time, and many customers do to save time in the block.
Will you finish everything on my list?
We can't guarantee it, and we won't pretend otherwise. We work your list in the priority order you give us, so the things that matter most get done first. If we run out of time, we schedule a follow-up visit rather than surprising you with extra billed hours that day.
What kinds of tasks work well in a day block?
Punch lists are ideal: drywall patching, TV and shelf mounting, faucet and toilet swaps, door adjustments and hardware, trim and caulking, light fixture replacement, furniture assembly, deck board repairs, weatherstripping, and small carpentry. Work that needs a permit, a special order part, or a licensed second trade usually isn't a fit.
Do I need an estimate first?
No. That's the point. The price is published, so you can book a half day or a full day online without an estimate visit or a phone call. If you have one specific project and want a firm number for that scope instead, request a virtual estimate and send photos - we turn those around fast.
How soon can you get here?
Fast service is what we're building this around. When you pick a block, you see our real open crew windows, so you're booking an actual date, not a callback request. If nothing works, call us and a real team member will help.
What time will the handyman arrive?
Arrival is a window, not an exact minute. Your tech reaches out the morning of the visit with a tighter time. Cancellations inside 24 hours of the visit may be charged a trip fee.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Iowa contractor registration #C106200, $1M/$2M general liability, and full workers' compensation on every project, backed by our Limited Lifetime Workmanship Guarantee. We're not the cheapest handyman in Central Iowa, and that's exactly why.
Do I have to pay a deposit to book a half day or full day?
No deposit is required. Nothing is charged when you book online. We invoice you after the service is complete, and payment is due upon receipt.
How do I pay, and what payment methods do you accept?
You'll receive an invoice after the visit and can pay it electronically. We accept credit cards, debit cards, other electronic payment methods, and checks. Payment is due upon receipt of the invoice.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellations inside 24 hours of the visit may be charged a trip fee. Outside of that window, reach out and we'll move your block to another open date at no cost - the same wording appears in your booking confirmation email.
Who buys the materials, and how are they billed?
Either works. If we buy materials, they're billed to you above and beyond the half-day or full-day charge - materials are always extra. If you'd rather supply your own materials, we won't charge you for materials at all. Note that if we need to make a run to the store during your visit, that trip counts inside the purchased working hours.
Do you charge a trip fee or travel surcharge for my city?
The rate is the same flat $450 or $850 anywhere in our normal Central Iowa service area - Ames, Des Moines, Ankeny, Urbandale, West Des Moines, Waukee, Clive, Johnston, Grimes, Altoona, Bondurant, Polk City, Norwalk, Boone, Nevada, Story City, and Huxley. No zone surcharge and no mileage add-on. If you're outside that footprint, call us before booking and we'll tell you honestly whether we can get there.
Is the day rate for one handyman or a two-person crew?
A half day or full day covers one experienced handyman. Some jobs genuinely need two sets of hands - heavy items, long trim runs, anything awkward to hold. If you think that's your list, call us and we'll price a two-tech block instead of sending one person to fight it alone.
Does the day rate apply to remodeling projects too?
No. Half-day and full-day booking is exclusive to the Iowa Home Consulting handyman division - small jobs, one day or less. Our design-build remodeling division is run as a separate operation with its own crews, project managers, and scheduling, and every remodel is scoped and quoted individually. Kitchens, baths, basements, additions, whole-house painting, and water damage restoration are never sold by the day.
Why are your handyman and remodeling services scheduled differently?
Because they're genuinely different businesses. Handyman work is about speed and breadth: a skilled tech, a punch list, and a block of hours you can book online today. Remodeling is about craftsmanship: design, selections, permits, licensed trades, and sequenced production crews, which takes planning and a scoped proposal. Same company, same values, same workmanship guarantee - two different operations on purpose.
Available across our whole Central Iowa service area.
Same flat rate in Ames, Des Moines, Ankeny, Urbandale, West Des Moines, Johnston, Altoona, Bondurant, Polk City, Boone, Nevada, Huxley, and the rest of our normal service area. No trip fee, no zone surcharge.
