Attic Insulation Upgrade in Ames
This project in Ames focused on improving thermal performance in an attic by supplementing existing insulation around a bathroom exhaust fan vent line. New unfaced batt insulation was added to enhance energy efficiency and reduce heat loss.

Improving a home's energy efficiency often involves addressing areas where heat loss is most common. In this Ames handyman project, the focus was on a specific area of the attic that lacked adequate insulation, particularly around a bathroom exhaust fan vent line.
The starting point
The existing attic insulation in the home was primarily unfaced batt insulation. However, a critical area above the bathroom, specifically around the bath fan vent line, had little to no insulation. This deficiency led to reduced thermal performance and increased heat loss from the home, impacting comfort and energy bills.
What we did
Iowa Home Consulting supplemented the existing attic insulation with new unfaced R-30 batt insulation. The work specifically targeted the area above the bathroom, extending approximately 6 feet deep by 8 feet wide. Our team installed two to three cross-laid layers of the new insulation to ensure comprehensive coverage and improve thermal resistance. Additionally, the bath fan duct was re-taped to secure connections and prevent air leaks, further enhancing the system's efficiency.
Details that mattered
Clear access to the attic space was crucial for this project, allowing our handyman to efficiently install the new insulation. The precise targeting of the area around the bath fan vent line was key to addressing a common point of heat escape. Installing multiple cross-laid layers of R-30 unfaced batt insulation helped create a more robust thermal barrier, directly tackling the identified issue of heat loss and improving the home's overall energy performance.
The result
The home now benefits from significantly improved thermal performance in the treated attic area. By supplementing the existing insulation with additional unfaced batt insulation and re-taping the bath fan duct, the potential for heat loss has been reduced.
