Iowa Home Consulting recently completed a handrail replacement project in Ames, enhancing the safety and appearance of two staircases. The project involved replacing existing wall-mounted handrails with new oak handrails, custom-stained and clear-coated to ensure durability and a cohesive look with the home's interior finishes.

The starting point

The home had two staircases with older wall-mounted handrails. One staircase had eight steps, and the other had seven. The existing handrails showed wear and no longer provided the desired aesthetic or safety features. The homeowners sought to upgrade these essential safety features with new, durable handrails that would also integrate seamlessly with their home's decor.

What we did

Our team removed the old wall-mounted handrails from both staircases. We then installed new oak wall-mounted handrails, totaling approximately 18 linear feet. These new handrails were carefully crafted with appropriate returns for a finished appearance and secured with new wall hardware. A key part of the process involved coordinating the stain color with the homeowners to match their existing finishes. After staining, each handrail received a clear coat for added durability and protection.

Details that mattered

Selecting the right stain color was a crucial detail. We provided the homeowners with various options, and they chose a dark bluish (navy) stain, specifically color 286 from our sample palette. To ensure the highest quality and longevity, an additional protective clear coat was applied to the handrails off-site before installation. This extra step provides a more robust finish, protecting the wood and stain from daily wear and tear. Communication with the homeowners throughout the process, from stain selection to scheduling and delivery updates, ensured a smooth and satisfactory experience.
