Water Damage Repair and Handyman Services in Des Moines
Iowa Home Consulting addressed water damage from a leaking shower, performing drywall repair, replacing a shower valve, sealing a shower door, and adjusting a bedroom door in a Des Moines home.

A homeowner in Des Moines experienced water damage near their shower and also had a bedroom door that was sticking. They contacted Iowa Home Consulting to address these issues, which required careful assessment and a multi-faceted approach to repair both the visible damage and the underlying cause.
The starting point
The main concern was water damage around the shower, which had affected the drywall, base trim, and shoe molding. The homeowner suspected the leak originated from a gap around the shower. Additionally, a bedroom entry door was catching and not closing properly due to being out of plumb.
What we did
Our team began with an inspection to understand the full extent of the water damage. This involved making an exploratory cut into the wall near the shower to check for issues with framing and insulation. We diagnosed a leaking shower head and identified the need for a new shower mixing valve cartridge and a new shower door seal to prevent future leaks.
The water-damaged drywall, base trim, and shoe molding were systematically removed. New drywall was installed, along with corner bead, and multiple coats of mud were applied, followed by sanding and texturing to match the existing finish. We then installed new trim by the shower.
For the bedroom door, we adjusted it to correct the catching and out-of-plumb issues. This involved inspecting the framing and shims, adjusting hinges, and/or installing longer fasteners to properly manipulate the frame. We also re-caulked and touched up the paint on the repairs.
Details that mattered
Accuracy in diagnosing the source of the water leak was crucial. We didn't just repair the visible water damage: we ensured the underlying plumbing issues were resolved. Replacing the shower mixing valve cartridge and adding a new waterproof seal to the shower door were key steps to prevent recurrence. Careful matching of trim and paint for the drywall repairs ensured a seamless finish. The detailed adjustment of the bedroom door went beyond a quick fix, addressing the root cause of its alignment problem.
The result
The Des Moines home now has a fully functional and leak-free shower, with all water-damaged areas professionally repaired and blended into the existing bathroom. The bedroom door operates smoothly, closing completely and without issues. The project effectively addressed both immediate repair needs and preventative measures for long-term durability.
